Patagonia wetsuits use the highest quality Japanese neoprene. It has a 98% closed-cell ratio, which adds dead air space and with it, warmth. The suits are handmade using an extremely high-quality limestone based neoprene to increase durability.
Their patented fabric construction incorporates a suit lining that blends merino wool with recycled polyester to trap more insulative dead-air space and quickly wicks moisture away from your skin. Wool is naturally warm even when wet, and naturally odor-resistant. Patagonia wool is softened without using chlorine, a pollutant commonly used to soften wool.
The neoprene/wool lining package is 90% warmer than conventional nylon-lined neoprene. The R3 will keep you surfing when water temps range between 48 and 55 degrees. This not only means less weight and increased flexibility for the warmth, it also means reducing the consumption of neoprene, and to a degree, helping preserve the natural resources that create it.
Patagonia uses chlorine-free wool, recycled polyester, PVC-free knee pads and thinner neoprene layers (without sacrificing warmth retention) to reduce the impact on the environment.
Patagonia use 3mm neoprene for their wetsuits, but due to the revolutionary construction, they keep you as warm if not warmer than a standard 5/3mm winter steamer.
