oneill_rg8_l New O’Neill Psycho RG8 men’s full winter steamer now in stock…

The latest Psycho wetsuit from O'Neill, the RG8 comes with more stretch than ever before and with great environmentally sound credentials.

The Psycho RG8 has some stunning features. The F.U.Z.E. single zip entry system means even less water will get in; add in the fact that the zip is O'Neill's Code Red version, and we're talking seriously water resistant.

Less zip means greater stretch (zips don't stretch, after all!). Single fluid seam weld means added flexibility, too. The neoprene itself is 100% RG8 Ultraflex, which is as stretchy as neoprene gets. So the RG8 gives you the best possible ease of movement of any winter steamer.

Other useful details include the Firewall back panel, keeping you lovely and warm on those chilly winter morning surfs. There's a handy key pocket with secure loop and of course, Krypto knee pads to protect your knees and reinforce this part of the suit.

Bear One of the great things about Watergate Bay is that it’s dog friendly, and this means that staff sometimes bring their four-legged friends to work. Bear (pictured) is here five days a week (he has Mondays and Tuesdays off). His duties include greeting customers, product testing (mostly balls and frisbees) and barking at kites. Working in a surf shop at Watergate Bay is the perfect career choice for a Border Collie – lots of walks on the beach, plenty of water to cool off in when it’s hot and a take-away restaurant next door serving a variety of sausage-based snacks. This dog’s life is pretty cushy…

R3 wetsuit Patagonia wetsuits are on their way!

We’ve been waiting and waiting, and now the wait is almost over…The Shop on the Beach at Watergate Bay has been chosen as one of just a handful of stores to stock the revolutionary new Patagonia wetsuits. These suits are like no others and they’ll be available here from August.

Patagonia wetsuits use the highest quality Japanese neoprene which has a 98% closed-cell ratio, which adds more air space, and with it much more warmth. But here’s the really cool part – the lining incorporates Merino wool which adds a whole extra level of insulation and also wicks moisture away from the skin, making you warmer and more comfortable. The R3 version, which we’ll be stocking, keeps you totally warm in water temperatures ranging from just 8 degrees Celsius.

The unique construction of the Patagonia wetsuits means that less neoprene can be used while still retaining incredible insulation, which is great for the environment. Add in the fact that the knee pads don’t contain any nasty PVC and the wool is chlorine free, and you’ve got an ecologically friendly wetsuit.

Sunset shop

Usually by this point in the summer (well, certainly for the last 3 years), Watergate Bay is being lashed by rain and the beach is full of people wearing waterproofs. This year, the temperature has been in the 20’s for weeks, with no sign of it ending and just the occasional, very brief, shower. What is going on?! We’ve almost run out of bikinis, we’re selling sunscreen like it’s going out of fashion and the office has become a sauna. I can dimly remember that this is what summer used to be like – what it should be like - but it just seems so…unusual. Not that I’m complaining, bring it on, long may it last. It just feels like we’d all got out of the habit of having warm, sunny summers, and now one’s finally arrived, we’re not quite sure how to handle it. People have been struggling into shorts that haven’t seen the light of day for quite a while, and let’s face it, just don’t fit anymore. Everyone seems to be having a least one sunburn disaster before they get their heads round the whole sunscreen thing. And kids have been flinging themselves into the sea first thing in the morning with just their bathers on and discovering that no, the water never does get warm enough for that kind of malarkey in this country.

Of course, now I’ve written this, we’ll no doubt be getting 12 degrees and horizontal rain by tomorrow…Enjoy it while it lasts!

Watergate Surf We’re revving up for the Easter weekend with a very mixed weather forecast…Right now, the sun is shining, but only yesterday there was snow falling on Bodmin Moor, just a few miles north. It looks like it will be a smorgasbord of climatic conditions, with rain, hail and gales forecast along with some more sunshine. So although we’ve got our new Reef flip flop range out on the shelves, we’re not putting the woolly hats, gloves and scarves away just yet.

But whatever the weather brings this weekend, we’d like to wish you a really happy Easter, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing!

Snowy-beach I realised today that none of us here had posted a blog for a shamefully long time…It’s just been so busy this winter. The weather has been challenging here, just like it has been everywhere else in the country. We’re just not used to it in Cornwall - we had deepish snow on the sand for 5 days straight, which has never happened before. Given that Watergate Bay lies at the bottom of a very steep hill, getting to work was no easy task. Getting home again afterwards was even harder! We’ve pretty much sold out of down jackets and warm winter boots…

Staff have been thin on the ground, too – Frenchi, our shop manager, had a cliff path running accident and has had major surgery on her knee – she’ll be off for at least 10 weeks recovering. Hannah and Nadine have both been in Sri Lanka surfing for a month (I’m trying not to let envy overwhelm me!).

We had our busiest Christmas ever, and our January sale kept us on our toes, too.

But enough of the excuses. There’s lots going on down at Watergate Bay now the sun is starting to peep out. Lots of lovely new stock is piling through the door – Patagonia, White Stuff, Salomon, Merrrell, Oxygen – it all looks great. We’ve also got two new women’s brands – Giggle and Mudd and Water, both of which are ethically sourced ranges using organic cotton. They’ll be on the website soon, so keep an eye out for them. We’ll be doing a little photo shoot on the beach with these new ranges, and we just need the temperature to get into double figures so the models don’t become hypothermic!
